How a mission trip forced me to Learn to Speak Spanish

Learning to speak Spanish as an adult is not always easy, but with easy to follow Spanish lessons anyone with passion can learn. I believe it now than I did few years ago. It feels like few months ago, but it has been more than three years now when I found myself in a situation where I had to learn to speak Spanish. Actually, it was initiated by a mission trip organized by our church that required us to go overseas to a Spanish speaking country to do mission work. Initially we had a designated leader who spoke both English and Spanish, but things changed five months before our trip. Our designated leader was send elsewhere and he was not going to be available as a guide. Since our pastor was not travelling, he appointed me the leader of the mission team!

To some people, this responsibility may look exciting, but for me it created a headache. First, I didn’t know any Spanish, so I was required to learn to speak Spanish before our trip if I was going to be a reliable team leader. I had taken some French lessons while I was in high school several years ago and my experience of learning a new language was terrible. Learning Spanish was the last thing I expected to do. I had led other people on other mission trips before, but at least there were several people speaking English in the countries that we visited. What scared me the most in this current trip was the fact that none of our team members spoke any Spanish. This meant everyone including the locals would be looking to me for answers.

Learning to speak Spanish before the trip was the only solution. I needed easy Spanish lessons that could at least save me during the mission. Initially I went around asking my friends and neighbors if anyone knew of anybody who would offer to teach me Spanish, but I was not successful. I started searching online for Spanish lessons, but the more I searched, the more overwhelmed and confused I got. When this didn’t seem to work, I went to Barnes and Nobles to buy Spanish lessons CD which would have been helpful if I had plenty of time to learn Spanish, but I only had less than five months.

My desperation led me back to the internet for more searches trying to find beginner online Spanish lessons that I could access and use from anywhere. My searches were not very fruitful and after two days I decided that I was going to handover the leadership responsibility to someone else. That evening while we were eating dinner at restaurant with my wife, we run into a friend who knew a Spanish professor from a nearby college and he gave me her contact. I called her and I think she was Godsend, because she recommended online Spanish lessons resource that worked like magic. I started with the online Spanish lessons immediately and in less than three months I was speaking Spanish.

Of course the rate at which everyone learn how to speak Spanish differs. However, one factor that will ultimately determine your success or failure is the type of Spanish lessons you are using. Since I came back from the mission trip, I continued to learn more advanced Spanish so that I can help others learn as well. After all it is now our second language and most job openings nowadays are becoming more and more bilingual oriented by every passing month.
